Duterte’s
Actions And His Words
Duterte’s
actions will always speak louder than his words
By Carlos Munda October 1, 2016
There’s a lot of well meaning advice from supporters of
President Duterte to tone down the language because they say it is being used
against him those who want to bring him down.
Unfortunately, sound as the advice may be, it simply won’t
work.
Duterte is too set in his ways to change now – the guy is
71 years old after all.
And besides, it doesn’t seem like he’s really affected by
it anyway. He just shrugs it off as one of those things and moves on with his
work.
That’s one thing many Davaoeños know by now, you take what
Duterte says with a grain of salt.
Otherwise you will just go nuts trying to understand him.
There are times that he is serious, and there are times
when he just wants to mess with people’s minds.
The trick is not just in knowing which is which, but also
in knowing when to ignore both.
Duterte’s value as a leader has never been as a public
speaker.
If that’s still not abundantly clear to some people by now,
then they will never get it.
His real leadership qualities can be seen in what he is
able to do, not how he talks.
The problem is, for many intellectuals – talk has more
value than action because that is all they can do.
But try for a moment to imagine the first 100 days of
Duterte without any of his controversial statements, and you’ll see that we
finally have a government that is not afraid to work.
In that short span, Duterte has
1.
Managed
to lower the crime rate
2.
Made
government more transparent
3.
Improved
basic services with a nationwide 911 system
4.
Increased
the salaries of frontline government workers
5.
Helped
our stranded OFWs
6.
Reached
out to our Asean neighbors
7.
Stood
up to our past colonial masters
8.
Convinced
thousands of drug addicts and pushers surrender
9.
Dismantled
several major illegal drug networks under the protection of police
officials
10.
Honored
our fallen soldiers and policemen
And this does not even include his most important
accomplishment – the progress in the peace negotiations with the communists and
Muslim rebels.
We have never been this close to finally ending this
decades-old conflict.
This is BIG news. This is Nobel Peace Prize news.
This is the story that people should be talking about – but
do you hear Duterte promoting it?
Do you hear him highlighting it in his speeches and
pronouncements?
No. Because it’s really just another job for him.
Something that he is paid to do, and so he does it.
Cynics may not believe it, but praise or condemnation does
not factor into the equation at all. That’s just how he is.
And because he is so confident that he is doing the right
thing, and so sure of his own actions – all this talk does not bother him as
much as it does everyone else.
Supporters and critics alike can pull their hair out by the
roots for all he cares – and that is just how things are going to be.
