The Most Perfect Volcano
Mayon is the most "perfect" stratovolcano; its eruptions have been very symmetric and given it a smooth conical shape.

Here's
Mount Fuji, another stratovolcano renowned for its symmetry. It has a pretty
good cone shape, but not nearly as perfect as Mayon, it's steeper on one side
than the other, and the top is crooked:
The Summer That Never Was
Mayon's biggest eruption was in 1814.
Mayon's biggest eruption was in 1814.
The
ash created by this eruption, which was piled up 30 feet deep in places,
contributed to "The Summer That Never Was" in 1815.
Due
to the eruptions of Mayon and other volcanos, there was so much ash in the
atmosphere blocking sunlight during the summer of 1815 that most of Europe and
North America were below freezing all summer.
The
sky was red or yellow at all times. Crops were killed by snow and lakes were
frozen in June and July.
Hundreds
of thousands of people died.
On
the plus side, it was a great time to stay indoor and write - a contest among
miserable authors stuck inside to see who could write the scariest story gave
us Frankenstein and A
Figment, the story that eventually inspired Dracula.
Some
historians argue that the deaths of horses due to food shortages during “The
Summer That Never Was” inspired the invention of the bicycle that year, there
weren't enough horses for people to get around on.
