DrinkMore Water
First of all, there
is a lot of hype (and I’ll tell you why I think it’s hype in a minute) about
alkaline water.
As you may or may not know, alkaline water
refers to water that has a higher PH (greater than 7 is considered alkaline,
less than 7 is considered acidic, and 7.0 is called neutral).
Certain things in the
water can make it either more alkaline or more acidic. It’s basic
chemistry and believe me, that’s the easy part, because everyone can agree
about that.
Now for reference
purposes, DrinkMore Water is very slightly acidic (like a pH of around 6.8).
When it comes to
marketers of devices that generate alkaline water – there have been many claims
made which are simply not supportable by traditional research methods.
I have a pretty
strong technical background (Mechanical Engineering degree & many
biomedical engineering courses from Duke) as does my brother (Masters in
Chemical engineering from MIT) and we have talked about alkaline water for
years.
There was a Japanese
machine on the market about 10 years ago that was selling for about $3000 – and
miracle cure claims were being made about drinking alkaline water.
I still see
occasional advertisements for specialty water devices with different ionic
qualities and contents, different minerals, etc. etc.
And I continue to get
inquiries about what I think about alkaline water.
Our philosophy (both
as a company and personally) is to provide pure drinking water to our customers.
There are and likely
always will be a variety of chemical contaminants in our tap water. Are there
enough contaminants to kill you – probably not.
But, medical research
has shown that drinking chlorinated water (which, on the one hand is good
because it enables tap water to be free from bacteriological contamination)
causes bladder, colo-rectal and breast cancers in slightly more than 1% of the
population.
Not a problem if
you’re in the 99%. Stinks if you’re in the 1%.
I’m a big believer in
getting rid of as many contaminants as possible from the water.
The human body is
such an incredibly complicated system that we just don’t understand exactly how
everything works and interacts.
One day we hear
alcohol is bad, the next day red wine is good.
Carbs are good, carbs
are bad, etc. I am certain that not every contaminant in water is bad for you –
calcium and magnesium are good!
But, I am also
certain that there are lots of contaminants that are bad for you – chlorine,
nitrates, organic compounds, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, various metals and
the like.
Some may be way more
toxic than we know now. Bottom line, let’s take as much of it out as possible.
Water should be H2O. Period.
So, does alkaline
water work? I truly don’t know. I do know this however.
Part of why we have
that acid is to aid in the digestion of food.
If you drink alkaline
water (say a PH of 9), you’re going to neutralize some of that acid – just like
a TUMS.
Is any of the alkaline
water still going to be alkaline when it leaves your stomach – I simply can’t
see how that can happen.
You couldn’t possibly
drink enough water to neutralize the acidity of your stomach acid.
So all of the
“benefits” of alkaline water – at least from my perspective – seem to disappear
once it goes into your stomach.
From a chemistry
standpoint, might as well take a TUMS, you’ll probably neutralize more acid
than drinking a gallon of alkaline water – if your goal really is to neutralize
your stomach acid.
Ultimately, it’s your
decision as to what you believe.
I truly believe that
our water is one of the best, if not the best, water available on the market
today.
I’ve done as much
research and work as I can do to design the best water purification system
possible. It is truly state of the art.
Hope this helps a little
(just for fun, Google “PH of
stomach acid”).
One other point worth
mentioning is that the pH of human blood is tightly “regulated” to be between
7.35 and 7.45. That’s slightly alkaline.
Your body’s systems
(from the kidney to the endocrine system) are designed to keep the blood’s pH
in that tight range.
So, I think there are
lots of people who think that drinking alkaline water will make the blood more
alkaline and that more alkaline blood is good.
But again, the humansystems have the job of maintaining the blood in very tight pH range using a
variety of buffering actions.
Be careful when you’re
being pitched the virtues of alkaline water and buying an expensive machine to
make it.
