Duterte
slams Lucio Tan for tax evasion: “These rich people, they are my enemies."
During President Rodrigo Duterte’s
three-day state visit in the Middle East, he disclosed that business tycoon
Lucio Tan owes the Philippines Php 30 billion in taxes which can augment government funding for infrastructure
building and social services.
“These rich people, they are my enemies. They can tell
that I envy them, and it is true. You sons of whores! But you should pay your
taxes. Why do I envy you? You keep on gaining riches and yet you don’t pay
taxes,” Duterte said.
“These rich people should pay taxes. Like Lucio Tan, up
to the last day of the campaign, he wanted to give me money. He kept on going
after me, but I told him I don’t accept money. And so I won by sixteen million
votes,” Duterte added.
“In the fullness of God’s time, sigurado ako basta wala
lang corruption at makuha ko ‘yung lahat ng taxes na hindi magbayad nitong mga
animal na ito. Lucio Tan has almost billion, 30 billion. He has to pay. He has
to pay. Lahat, they have to pay,” Duterte said during his speech in
Qatar.
As part of his campaign against
corruption, Duterte promises to make elites like Tan pay what is due in order
to forward policies for the poor.
“Kaya sabi ko, itong Pilipinas, ito para lang sa mga
taong naghirap. Kayo ang protektahan ko. Iyong mga mayaman talagang kalaban ko
‘yan,” Duterte said.
The President further emphasized
that he is dauntless in pursuing the rich who are evading their taxes saying
that he since had the gall to curse former President Barack Obama,
he also had to the gall to make the oligarchs pay their taxes.
Duterte showed he owes these
business tycoons nothing because he had turned down their offer to contribute to
his presidential bid, leaving no strings attached.
“Yang si Lucio Tan halos to the last day ng kampanya
habol nang habol sa akin ‘yan kasi gustong magbigay ng pera. Sabi ko, ‘No.’ Si
MegaWorld, sabi ko, ‘Hindi ako tumatanggap. Ayaw ko.’ Kaya naman nanalo ako 6 million,” Duterte
said.
