What is an angel’s chief duty for the
believer? Do unbelievers have guardian angels?
Does each believer
has his own angel or more than one?
Are angels
dispensed only in emergencies or are they ever present with Christians?
Who Has a Guardian Angel?
Does each
and every believer in Christ Jesus has his own angel?
We know that Jesus
had, and could command, a multitude of angels (Luke 22:43).
It is possible that
many of us have even encountered angels and have not even known about it. The writer of Hebrews tells us to, “Keep on loving one another as brothers
and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing
some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it“ (Hebrews 13:1-2).
Not only do
believers have angels protecting them, the Body of Christ in general (the Church)
has multiple thousands of angels watching over it (Hebrews 12:22-23).
Angels are our
protectors when God sovereignly commands them and are under God’s sovereign
hand. We might conclude that Christians have guardian angels.
But let us
read on before making this determination.
The fact is that
angels are commanded by God to “encamp
all around us” and keep us from falling or getting hurt and they have been
with us and will be with us “…from this
time forth and forever [will] be with us”… and even strengthens us and “minister to us” (Hebrews 1:7,14, Psalm
34:7, 91:10-13, 103:21).
There is scriptural
evidence that children, before and after they become believers, also have
angels watching over them. These same angels communicate to the Father on their
behalf. But do they have specific angels assigned to them and also
to adult believers? (Matthew 18:10)
What Do Guardian Angels Look Like?
The little chubby
angels that look like infants with angel wings are not biblical.
For example, not
all angels have wings. Most do not. And if we could actually see an
angel, we would probably pass out from fear.
But they are most
certainly nothing to fear for believers for they are messengers of God and they
are protectors of those who are Christ’s (Luke 1:19-26).
What Types of Angels Are in the Bible?
Angels are
extremely powerful. The prophet Isaiah
had the great privilege of seeing them and wrote, “The Lord sitting on the high extolled throne, the hems of His
vestments filling the whole temple. Surrounding Him were the Seraphim, each
having six wings; with two they covered His face, with two they covered His
feet, and they flew with the other two. And they called to each other and said:
Holy, Holy, Holy, the Lord Sabaoth! The whole world is filled with His Glory“ (Isaiah
6:1-4).
Ezekiel chapter
10:9-20 gives a vivid description of them that is hard to imagine.
Certain angels were solely created for the purpose of giving continuous praise
and worship to God Almighty as found in Isaiah chapter 6.
There are also
fallen angels (Luke 8:31). These are angels that have
rebelled against
God Almighty and have followed Satan, the most powerful created being that God
has ever created.
These angels are
wicked spirits and seek to harass and cause the destruction and fall of
believers (Ephesians 6:11-12, 1 Peter 5:8).
Interesting Bible Facts About Angels
Luke 16:22
indicates that when the believer dies, angels could bring their
spirit to heaven in the presence of God.
The word “angels” in
Luke 16:22 is plural. This gives some indication that more than one
angel is involved, just as children have more than one
angel (also plural) watching over them (Matthew 18:10).
Angels are actually commanded by God to “encamp all around us” and keep us from
falling and getting hurt. Angels have been with us and will be with us “…from this time forth and forever to be
with us”… and even strengthen us, and minister to us (Psalm 34:7,
91:10-13, 103:21).
The angels are also
messengers of ours to God and sometimes from God to us (Daniel 10, Matthew 18:10).
It appears
that there are particular angels for particular churches or church ages
too (Revelation 1:20).
Angels are no
weaklings either (Revelation 18:21). In fact, angels have been known to
carry out a death penalty from God on a king (Acts 12:20-25).
Does Acts 12:15
really mean that Peter’s own angel freed him from prison (Acts
12)? That is what those who were in the house of John Mark’s mother
said (Acts 12:15).
When Peter came to the door they said “You are mad.” But she constantly affirmed that was so. Then they said, “It is his angel.” However, this is no conclusive proof that it
was actually Peter’s angel who was assigned specifically to him.
Our protection is from God and not from angels.
At least. we can
take comfort in the fact
that angels do exist. They serve both God and us. But ultimately, our
protection is from God and not from angels.
They are real, no
doubt. It is no stretch of the imagination to say that each and every
believer, and each child before he reaches the
age of accountability could be,
or has been, protected by angels before. We cannot dogmatically say that each
believer has at least one angel assigned to him.
It appears that
there may be even more than one angel at times, but that does not mean that
they are their personal angel that God assigned to them. We do
know that they are watching over God’s children (Matthew 4:6. Psalm 91:11,
12).
God is the One, true Protector of His own children.
God is the One, true Protector of His own children.
One thing is
definite: If you are not a believer in Christ Jesus, and have not received Him
into your life, then you have no angels watching over you. Worse, God will
not answer your prayers.
Why not come to
faith in Christ today and take shelter under His divine protection? Have Him
grant you eternal life by repenting and trusting in Him.
He
says, “I will instruct you and teach you
the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm
32:8).
Ask
God to show you what to do. Pray the following prayer:
“Heavenly Father,
I admit that I am a sinner and my sins have
separated me from You. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life and
begin a new life with You.
Please forgive me. I now receive your Son,
Jesus Christ as my Savior, my Master and my Lord. I believe and confess that
Jesus Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose from the dead.
I want to receive all that Jesus Christ has
provided for me as my Savior. Your Word says, ‘Whosoever shall call on the name
of the Lord shall be saved’ (Romans 10:13).
I believe and confess that Jesus Christ is
the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no man comes unto the Father, but by Him.
Lord Jesus, I pray and ask You, to come
into my heart and be Lord of my life. I thank You that you have given me
eternal life, and according to Your Word, I am born again.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of
the Holy Spirit that is in me now. I surrender my life to You.
Use me for Your glory.
In Jesus Name. Amen.”
