1Now
I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I
preached to you, which you received, in
which you stand,
2 and
by which you
are being saved, if you hold
fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I
delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for
our sins in
accordance with the Scriptures,
4 that
he was buried, that he was raised on
the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures,
5 and
that he appeared
to Cephas, then to
the twelve.
6 Then
he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are
still alive, though some have fallen asleep.
7 Then
he appeared to James,
then to all the
apostles.
8 Last
of all, as to one untimely born, he
appeared also to me.
9 For I
am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I
persecuted the church of God.
10 But
by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On
the contrary, I
worked harder than any of them, though
it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
11 Whether
then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. 1
Corinthians 15 - English Standard Version
(ESV)
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the
foundational doctrine of Christianity. It proves that Jesus was who He claimed
to be - the Son of God.
Jesus Christ’s
resurrection is a historical fact.
The resurrection of Jesus is as widely reported as His
actual existence.
There were many eyewitness accounts of the risen Savior:
- Mary
Magdalene saw Jesus at the tomb (John 20:14–17).
- A few chosen disciples saw Him before the whole group
did (Acts 1:2-3)
– A couple on their way to Emmaus had a long conversation
with the risen Lord (Luke 24:13-35).
- Large groups saw Christ after his resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:4-8).
Prophecies about
the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
Jesus
rose from the dead as the Scriptures had previously prophesied (1 Corinthians 15).
The
prophet Isaiah wrote that Christ would be cut off from the living and then be
brought back to prolonged life (Isaiah
53:8-10).
Psalm
22 talks extensively of Christ’s death, but also about His eternal life. Many
Old Testament prophecies about the resurrection can only be understood because
of what we know today, by looking back at history.
When
Jesus Christ started to speak of His death, those around Him were shocked
because they were expecting a warrior Messiah who would deliver the Hebrew
people from Roman oppression, and take the leadership of their nation.
Jesus’ tomb was well
guarded:
The
enemies of Jesus Christ made sure that His followers would not steal His body. It
could not be claimed that the resurrection of the Savior was a hoax. The Bible presents
details helping us know the facts surrounding the resurrection of our Lord.
First, a large stone was rolled in place at the entrance of
the tomb (Matthew 27:66). A stone for this purpose would have weighed
between 1 to 2 tons, approximately the weight of a medium car. Tombs were
usually located downhill. Removing the stone locking the entrance was not easy
because the stone would have to be rolled uphill. It was impossible for a few
men to silently roll the stone away without calling the attention of the guards.
Second, a Roman guard was sent to protect the tomb (Matthew 27:64-66). A Roman guard, called “Koustodia” was composed of 16 battle-hardened soldiers. The
punishment for falling asleep on duty or walking away from their post was death. With such a steep price to pay, it does not
make sense that they would have simply fallen asleep without divine
intervention. There was an additional 300 to 350 Jewish temple guards in the
premises.
Third, the Roman seal was impressed in wax laid at the
door (Matthew 27:66). Death by crucifixion was the punishment for
breaking the seal.
The tomb was not
completely empty. Jesus’ grave clothes were still right where His body
was laid (John 20:1-7). They lay there empty as if Jesus’ body went right through
out of them. If the body had been stolen, the thieves would not have taken the
time to remove the grave clothes meticulously and laid them out so carefully.
As
believers, we would be the most miserable of all men if it were not for the
resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:19). Jesus Christ’s resurrection was the promise
of our future resurrection
13 But
if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been
raised.
14 And
if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is
in vain.
15 We
are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God
that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead
are not raised.
16 For
if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 1
Corinthians 15:13 - English Standard
Version (ESV)
The resurrection of Jesus Christ was a bodily
resurrection
Physical
death meant spiritual separation from the body. For children of God, it also
meant to be in the presence of the Lord (Philippians 1:23; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Luke 23:43).
The
resurrection of Christ was not just a spiritual resurrection, but a bodily
resurrection as well.
13 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is
perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is
sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If
there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living
being”;the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural,
and then the spiritual.
47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from
heaven.
48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the
dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of
heaven.
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image
of the man of heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:42 English Standard Version (ESV)
The three members
of the Trinity were involved in Jesus’ resurrection.
If
the Spirit of him
who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through
his Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:11 English Standard Version (ESV)
God the
Father did the raising, Jesus was the raised, and the Holy Spirit provided the power for the raising of Christ.
Trinity
involvement is also mentioned in
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 1 Peter 3:18 English Standard Version (ESV)
The resurrection of
Christ is the beginning and pattern of the resurrection of believers.
Christ
rose from the dead first, but it was the assurance of what was to come in our
resurrection as children of God (1
Corinthians 15:20, 23).
The
power that God used to raise up Christ will be used in our resurrection (1 Corinthians 6:14).
Some
of us will be alive at the time of Christ’s return as we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (The Coming of the Lord)
13 But
we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that
you may not grieve as others do who
have no hope.
14 For since
we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will
bring with him those
who have fallen asleep.
15 For
this we declare to you by
a word from the Lord, that we
who are alive, who are left until the
coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the
Lord himself will descend from
heaven with
a cry of command, with the voice of an
archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the
dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then
we who are alive, who are left, will be caught
up together with them in
the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we
will always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore
encourage one another with these words. English Standard Version (ESV)
The unbelievers - those who refused to
receive Christ as Lord and Savior - shall be raised to life after a thousand
years, during the second resurrection. Their names
shall not be found written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Judgment Before the Great White Throne
The
rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. Revelation 20:5
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From
his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne,
and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the
book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the
books, according to what they had done.
13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades
gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of
them, according to what they had done.
14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This
is the second death, the lake of fire.
15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of
life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. English Standard Version (ESV)
Are you struggling
with a big decision or wondering how your eternal future will play out?
Why not talk to
the God of the universe and let Him work in your behalf?
He says, “I will instruct you and teach you the way
you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm 32:8).
Ask God to show
you what to do. Pray the following prayer:
“Heavenly
Father,
I admit
that I am a sinner and my sins have separated me from You. I now want to turn
away from my past sinful life and begin a new life with You.
Please
forgive me. I now receive your Son, Jesus Christ as my Savior, my Master and my
Lord. I believe and confess that Jesus Christ died for my sins, was buried, and
rose from the dead.
I want to
receive all that Jesus Christ has provided for me as my Savior. Your Word says,
‘Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved’ (Romans 10:13).
I believe
and confess that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no man
comes unto the Father, but by Him.
Lord
Jesus, I pray and ask You, to come into my heart and be Lord of my life. I
thank You that you have given me eternal life, and according to Your Word, I am
born again.
Heavenly
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit that is in me now. I
surrender my life to You. . I promise to study Your Word – the Bible.
Use me for
Your glory.
In Jesus’
Name. Amen.”

lyrics
As I look back
On what I thought was living
I'm amazed at the price
I choose to pay
And to think I ignored
What really mattered
'Cause I thought the sacrifice
Would be too great
But when I finally reached
The point of giving in
I found the cross
Was calling even then
And even though
It took dying to survive
I've never felt so much alive
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
Not I but Christ
That lives within me
His Cross will never ask for more
Than I can give
For it's not my strength but His
There's no greater sacrifice
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
As I hear the Savior
Call for daily dying
I will bow beneath
The weight of Calvary
Let my hands surrender
To His piercing purpose
That holds me to the cross
Yet sets me free
I will glory in
The power of the cross
The things I thought were gain
I count as loss
And with His suffering
I identify
And by His resurrection power
I am alive
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
Not I but Christ
That lives within me
His Cross will never ask for more
Than I can give
For it's not my strength but His
There's no greater sacrifice
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
And I will offer all I have
So that His cross is not in vain
For I found to live is Christ
And to die is truly gain
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
Not I but Christ
That lives within me
His Cross will never ask for more
Than I can give
For it's not my strength but His
There's no greater sacrifice
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
For I am crucified with Christ
And yet I live
